Esther 3:7-4:1-4
“The Grieving of the Holy Spirit”
King Ahasuerus (the human soul) has a mind to think with, emotions to feel with, and a will to decide with.
1. The Situation of the Story Vs. 7-15
Mordecai adopted Esther from her real family (after they died), just like we are adopted into God’s family by the Holy Spirit. Neither the Holy Spirit nor the flesh will give up on influencing a human soul. Haman lies about the people of God, he tells the king that they are not obeying the king’s laws and are a threat to him (the influence of the flesh).
When a lost soul tries or thinks about coming to the Holy Spirit, the flesh kicks it into high gear to prevent it. That’s when spiritual warfare is declared.
2. The Sorrow of the Spirit Vs. 4:1-4
Esther is grieved because Mordecai is grieved. Notice that she doesn’t know why He is grieving. Grieving the Spirit is breaking the heart through sorrow.
-1 Corinthians 3:1- They are Christians but have put the ring on Haman’s finger (people of the flesh, they are infants, dependent on others.) The milk is the word that someone else has worked on and fed it to you, pre-digested. Meat is what you’ve worked on yourself and have learned by the Holy Spirit, not needing it pre-digested.

Esther doesn’t know what’s going on because she hasn’t seen Mordecai for a while; she has been distracted by her husband and new things. When we are distracted by things of the world and are not walking with God then we have become a carnal Christian.
3. The Strategy of the Carnal Vs. 4:4
Just like Esther, we can be grieved by the Holy Spirit when He is grieving but no know why. We don’t know what’s wrong. Our happiness becomes disrupted so we try to satisfy Him. She tries to send Him things that have made her happy. When this happens we try to look to the outside (the world) for a solution instead of at ourselves (what wrong in our life that is grieving Him). We try and make the world make us happy again.
